Aim

At the end of this course, which is delivered by both lectures and practicals, students will be able to describe mechanisms governing physiological responses and adaptations of the human body.

 

 

General teaching goals

• Research methodology in biomedicine, introduction to systems biology and its role in precision medicine
• “OMICs” technologies and their use in precision medicine
• Introduction to microscopy and its applications in biomedical research and precision medicine.
• Introduction to genetic engineering and gene therapy using modern gene targeting and repair methods
• Introduction to the cardiovascular system. Structure and function
• Origin of the heart rhythm and electrical activity
• The heart as a pump
• Characteristics of blood and lymphatic flow
• Cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms
• Special circulatory systems
• Introduction to the gastrointestinal system. Physiology and anatomy of the gastrointestinal system.
• Digestion, absorption and nutritional principles
• Gastrointestinal motility
• Physiology and anatomy of the liver, gall bladder and pancreas
• GI applied physiology – pathophysiology – syndromes resulting from GI dysfunction – Student questions
• Introduction to lung structure and function
• Gas exchange in the lung and transport to tissues
• Regulation of respiration
• Renal function
• Physiology of urination
• Extracellular matrix regulation, fluid and volume
• Acid-base balance
